The Rooster Who Blew Up the Chemical Plant

There once was a cat who worked at a chemical plant with his friend green slug.  They both went to the swimming pool.  They lifted some weights there.  The next day they saw that their work was broken!  Someone blew up the plant and they were going to find out who did it.  They went to get their detective gear and they were ready to go.  They're on the hunt.  First they go to the ducks house.  They ask him a few questions about the plant.  He says he never blew it up.  They head up to rooster's house.  He said he did it.  There!

100 Word Challenge - Week 9 by Caleb

"My swimming pool!" I yelled as a sumo wrestler jumped on it and broke it.  He lifted up our house and y dad was dangling from it.  My dad was holding my green, blue, yellow and purple cat.
Daddy fell and shouted, "Me broken me leg".
I knew that was bad grammar but dad always got angry when I tell him that he used bad grammar.  I saw the sumo wrestler and he threw my bed.  It whizzed past me.  Just then Barney came and the sumo wrestler fled.  Barney gave me a present.  It was a Xbox 360.

Gilbert the Cat

Once upon a time there was a cat.  His name was Gilbert.  Gilbert loved swimming in green water.  Gilbert was a very talented cat.  He knew how to swim, dance and talk.  How Gilbert got out of the pool was a broken platform that lifted him to the ground.  Gilbert's owners name was Lisa.  Lisa was a very good owner.  She was nice because she let Gilbert run away to play with his friends as long as he came back when ever he felt like it.  She also let him eat human food as long as he did not get sick.  Gilbert and Lisa are the best!

We Are Blogging!

This week we were finally able to get our classroom iPads up and running, hooray!

We have started a kidblog - where every student will have their own blog page connected to a class blog where they can post their own entries.  We are focusing on using these blogs right now for responses to our read aloud The Fourteenth Goldfish.

Check out our posts and please leave the students comments, they would love to hear from you!

http://kidblog.org/MissAdamsons4th5thGraders/

For parents interested - students are able to access their blogs from home and write their posts directly onto the blog.  I will be sending home information next week about how to log in and their passwords.

Random

Once there was a cat named Larry.  He was really kooky.  One time he was at the beach swimming and he spotted an island.  He swam to the green island and met some platypuses.  He lifted them up and threw them into a llama hole.  As the llamas were eating the platypuses, Larry was watching the pickles growing on the trees.  As the pickles grew larger, a giant unicorn ate them.  As the unicorn was eating, a broken tree was falling.  The unicorn walked across the tree and got eaten by beluga whales.  Then a talking cheese curl rolled next to him and he started talking....

The Fourteenth Goldfish - Chapters 6-10 by Abigail, Ethan, B.L. and Ian

This week we finished the chapters 6 to 10 in the novel that we are reading.  This book is called The Fourteenth Goldfish.
The main character Ellie is a young girl, and her grandpa Melvin is a scientist who lately discovered the 'fountain of youth'.  He transformed into a teenager and now he is 13 and is going to school with Ellie.
We remember when Ellie had a corn dog and she saw her best friend Brianna from elementary.  She decides to go over and chat with her.  She sees her in the school volleyball uniform and with a new haircut.  She offers her half a corn dog.  Then memories pop in her head like popcorn.  She remembers when they used to make commercials for corn dogs.  Do you have any kind of food that reminds you of someone?  Abigail says that meat buns remind her of her grandma because she makes the best meat buns ever.
We can't wait to read the rest of this book.

Some of our groups drawings of what we think scientists look like.

The Fourteenth Goldfish - Chapters 6-10 by Adam, Billy and Miguel

Did you ever want to be a scientist?  Well if you said this book is just right for you!  This book is about a 6th grade girl named Ellie.  Ellie lives with her mom and her grandpa.

We liked the part when Raj said, "You're just a kid" to Melvin.  We we liked the part when Melvin was arrested.

We like this book because it reminds us of the show called My Pet Goldfish is Evil!

We're wondering if Melvin is ever going to get old again, what do you think?

We also wonder if he will start driving again and if he will age normally.  What do you think?

The Forest

Once there was a guy named Max, he likes to bring his friends to the forest to play a game called ditch.  It's a fun game to play but it was dark out.  Then they went to get apples.  So they were walking in the forest with two flags and dropping apples so they could find their way back home!  Then they found their spot to play the game and they put one flag on each base.  This was Max's first time playing ditch so he didn't know how to play.  Suddenly he was lost in the forest.  Max saw a guy in the trees that was dressed in a black coat and was coming towards Max.  Then Max was so scared that he ran back home.  Then the guy in the black coat said...

100 Word Challenge - Week 8 by Adam

Once upon a time, there was a kid that always wore a cloak at recess.  The kid with the cloak always stood between two trees.  Everyone at school called him or her THE MYSTERY PERSON.  No one ever say with the mystery person at luck or no one would want to go to his or her house for a play date.
One day I felt sorry for them so at lunch recess I asked him or her to play and they said, "GO AWAY YOU CHILD!"
Okay I thought to my self.  That person has some anger issues.  I wonder if the mystery person ever ate a pizza?

Two Weeks in Review - By Billy and Miguel

Billy:

This week we did a fun math day where we used brownies to make up a question to solve and then got to eat them.

In gym we got to play dodgeball one day.

Miguel:

This week we watch a video of dancing worms counting in French.

We have started to play badminton in gym.  We practiced first by hitting, 'striking' different things like pool noodle pieces and tennis balls.

We did a science experiment.  We learned about air pressure using a hard boiled egg.  It didn't smell very good, but it was cool.

We also learned sign language for the 7 teachings: respect, truth, honesty, wisdom, courage, love and humility.  Thank you Sydney!

The Fourteenth Goldfish - Chapters 6-10 by Ben, Kira, Braeden and Mackenzee

We've really enjoyed this book so far.  Here are just a few things from the book that we have liked:

We think it was funny how Melvin thinks he can drive, but he forgets he's really 13, not 76.  Melvin forgot how the fountain of youth turned him young again.  That got us wondering about how the fountain of youth works.  We want to learn more about the fountain of youth and how it turns you young again.

One part that left us hanging was on the bus, Melvin says, "we're getting off on a different stop".  Then we stopped reading so it left us hanging and wanting to read more.  Our teacher Ms. Adamson read the name of the next chapter, "Building Twenty-Four".  That really left us hanging.

The part where Melvin and Ellie are making a lab in Ellie's garage reminds us of a Calvin and Hobbes comic where Calvin and Hobbes are making a hide out in Calvin's garage and they push the car out and the car rolls away.  Has anything like this happened to you?

We created pictures of what we think scientists look like!

The Fourteenth Goldfish - Chapters 1-5

As a class, we have started reading the book "The Fourteenth Goldfish" by Jennifer Holm.  We are reading this as part of a Global Read Aloud, which will allow us to connect with other classes from around the world.

In the first five chapters we have met our main character Ellie. She is an 11 year old girl who has just entered middle school.  A few of the fifth graders in our class are now a little bit nervous about going to middle school next year because of the things Ellie described.  They don't have anything to worry about though because we know that they will end up loving it!

When we first met Ellie she told us about her pet goldfish, Goldie.  She got him as a present in preschool from her teacher and still has  him to this day (grade 6).  It turns out though that her mother Melissa has secretly been replacing him whenever he dies, and that Goldie is in fact the 13th Goldie.  We wondered why her mother would do that and talked about some of the reasons that she may have.  We decided that maybe it was because she wanted to protect Ellie's feelings and only told her when she was older because she thought that she could handle it.  As far as we know, no one in our class has been through a similar situation.  We were curious though how old goldfish could live and discovered that the oldest goldfish on record lived to be 43 years old!  Why do you think Ellie's mom kept replacing the goldfish without telling Ellie when they died?  And has something similar ever happened to you?

We've also met our other main character, Melvin.  Melvin is quite the character.  He is a 13 year old boy but it turns out that he is really Ellie's grandfather!  He tells her that he has discovered the fountain of youth and tested it on himself.  At first Ellie is skeptical that he is really her grandfather, but soon she sees undeniable similarities and characteristics.  Melvin talks about how scientists are different then other people because they don't see the impossible, only the possible.  Even if they continue to fail they will keep trying because they believe that it is possible.  We talked about some things that people have told us were impossible but with hard work we were able to achieve them.  Katarina said that someone told her that she would never be able to make the competitive gymnastics team, but she did.  Luke told us that someone told him that making 9A1 for hockey was impossible, but he made it. Can you think of a time that you were told something was impossible but you made it happen?  What was it?

We are excited to continue reading the book and can't wait to find out what happens next!

100 Word Challenge - Week 7 by Ian

I was playing football with my friends.  They threw the football deep in the forest and they made me get it!  I was about half way when I heard a voice, so I ran to the football.  But right where the football was, there was a house.  I stepped on the porch and it went bezerk! Suddenly, I was locked in the same house.  I heard a voice coming from the next room... and I could not believe the smell.  There he was Caillou.  And guess what, it was a deadly Caillou, he was made of pure farts and then he jumped on me! Blech!

100 Word Challenge - Week 7 by Alexis

Yummy!

It was an ordinary day and I was walking home.  On my way home I walk past a donut store then a yummy garbage dumpster.  The dumpster smelled like rotten apples, skulls and tuna fish.  So I walk home and every time I pass the donut store I plug my nose.  Then this time I pass the yummy dumpster, but this time it smells like stuffing, jelly beans and caramel apples.  I could not believe the smell, it was so yummy (I hate good smells) that I had to plug my nose.  I got home and told my mom I am never walking to school again!

100 Word Challenge - Week 7 by Adam

Once there was a little girl named Chloe the stinky girl.  Everyone calls her that at school because once Chloe walked into the stinky cave of doom.  And you know what they say if you take one tiny step in the stinky cave of doom you're doomed forever!  Chloe didn't believe in that stuff. So one of her friends made a bet.  They bet that if Chloe could prove that the stinky cave of doom was false, she would get $20.  Chloe thought this would be an easy deal.  When Chloe took one step inside the stinky cave she said, "I could not believe the smell..."

100 Word Challenge - Week 7 by Abigail

What's That Smell?

One day I was standing in line at school waiting for the last bell of the day to ring.   5, 4, 3, 2, 1, brrrrng!  All the kids burst out of the school, pushing and shoving each other.  Me and my two brothers started walking home.  It was about a 10 to 15 minute walk home.  When we got home I could not believe the smell of supper.  I asked my mom, "what are we having for supper?"
She said, "we are having meat buns!"
"Yum," I thought.  The smell was so good that I asked, "when is supper?"
My mom asked my brother to set the table.  Finally it was time for supper and it was very, very good.

100 Word Challenge - Week 7 by Caleb

B.L.T. Sandwich

One day I was eating a B.L.T. sandwich when there was a thump and Big Bird walked out of the chimney.  Big Bird stole my sandwich and ran through the front door.  I chased him through streets filled with people, fields filled with wheat and 1,000,000 villages and jumped through a manhole and swam through the sewer.  I swam after him.  Bad idea!  I could not believe the smell.  It was terrible.  Out of the blue Big Bird kicked me.  "Noooooooo, i'm paralized!" I wailed.  Then I fainted. I woke up and I was in my bed, weird.  It must have been all a dream.

100 Word Challenge - Week 7 by Ben

Smelly Surprise

I was locked up in a castle with no escape.  I decided to explore.  Nervously, I went up a flight of steps.  Up there were two bedrooms with one bed in each.  I went back down and I found a lit torch! I looked around and saw a door that had a sign that said basement.  I went down with the torch.  As soon as I got down, I could not believe the smell.  It was coming from a treasure chest.  I opened it up and a skunk popped up and said, "Hi, i'm your smelly buddy."  Then he farted.

100 Word Challenge - Week 7 by Katie

Ahhhhh!

One morning I woke up to a foul stench in my room.  I wondered what it was, I could not believe the smell.  All of a sudden a sock with eyes attached itself to my chest and sucked out all the toys.  Then, it looked at me!  It attached itself to my nose and sucked out my glitter.  It grabbed my stuffed toy platypus and licked it 270,686 times.  It exploded! Then it rained donuts so of course I celebrated by eating one.  The donuts then came alive and ate the sock and then each other.

The Cooking Turtle

There was a turtle named Shelly and she had a brother named Ron.  Ron was a rude turtle.  Shelly was the best cook in the sea.  "Ron, pancakes are ready."
"Ok, i'm coming!" After Ron was finished he let out a burp, shaking the whole ocean.
Shelly said, "I could not believe the smell of you Ron."
"Sorry!  Oh no! I attracted SHARKS! Swim! Swim! Swim!"
"Ron, it's just a shadow of a boat!"
"Oh, so we're ok?"
"Yes Ron."
"Good, that boat worried me, I thought it was a shark.  Can you make me a hamburger now?"

100 Word Challenge - Week 6 by Gabriel

He was very tall and skinny, I was touched then everything went black.  Suddenly I was able to see again.  I saw another paper, I ran up to it, yanked it away and ran.  I looked back all I could see was static, it was weird.  So I kept running and saw another paper.  Again I took it and took off like a rocket only to bump into the same man.  I ran around him and kept running and saw another paper (that makes four!).  I still didn't know what in the world was going on so I ran off again.

A Week in Review - By B.T.

This week we learned about the seven sacred teachings. We know that the eagle means love and that the bison means respect. We also learned that he wolf means humanity, the turtle is truth and the sabe/bigfoot is honesty. And lastly the bear means courage. Also, we did a piece of art work to go with it.  We used the same animals as the seven sacred teachings. We used the art work called zentangle. Did you know that zentangle is the art of doodling? Here are some examples!

This week our class celebrated the end month by doing skittle math! Miss Adamson gave us some skittles on a paper plate. We had to sort them into their colours. After we were done, we made a word problem based on the colours of skittles that we had.

Braeden also celebrated his birthday and brought us rice crispy treats!
Yum!

In gym class we learned a new game called The Goalie Game.  Here is how you play: Get a group of 4 or 5. Then you get four pylons and put them on opposite sides. Then you grab a frisbee and try to score on the other teams net.

We also got to play on the jungle gym during free gym time.  It was so much fun!

100 Word Challenge - Week 6 by Alexis

Noooooo!!!

When I was a little girl about eight years old I noticed that my vision with my left eye was fuzzy.  I looked in the mirror and my eye was blurry and just messed up.  Then I closed my right eye all I could see was the fuzzy light from the bathroom.
Then I asked my mom what was wrong, she said "Oh my gosh!"
I asked, "what?"
"It looks like a cataract!"
So I went to the doctors they did surgery.  Two weeks later at home suddenly I could see again and the whole world was different.  All was right in the world!

100 Word Challenge - Week 6 by Aidan

One day I was walking in the forest.  I heard a noise, it was Elmo!!  He shot me with his magical powers.  I was blind!  What was I going to do?  I couldn't go play a staring contest or play eye spy.  I was doomed.  I asked this old man "what should I do?"
"Well, there's only one way."  He replied as he hit me in the head with his cane!
Suddenly, I was able to see again!  I told myself never to go in the woods with Elmo, it's very dangerous.  So I headed home never to return again.

100 Word Challenge - Week 6 by Cayden

Barny!

"Ahhhhhhhh!" I screamed as Barny the dinosaur blinded me with his magical rainbow powers.
"Hurry, over here," something whispered as it tugged me away from the light.
"I'm blind!" I yelled.
"Here, i'll help." It mumbled.
Suddenly, I was able to see again.  "G-ghost?!" I said.
"Barny killed me and many others, now, he is hunting you! Take this crossbow and exterminate him."
"Okay," I said.  Now I was a Barny hunter.  All of a sudden, Barny found our hideout and tried to blind me again.  I shot him with a crossbow and he died.

The End!

100 Week Challenge - Week 6 by Caleb

Stuck!

I should have been in my bed snoring away at this unearthly hour, but where was I?  I was stuck.  Stuck in the middle of a haunted, creepy and enchanted castle.  Someone had locked me in.  The castle had legends of the dark knights who roamed with no hearts.  Some people said there were still dark knights there, I didn't believe that.  I was at the top of a winding staircase and I was facing a big oak door.  I opened the door and I saw a person with a white gown and... blackness. I could not see!  Suddenly I was able to see again the person with the white gown.  I was able to see more clearly now than before.  He took a step towards me!

100 Word Challenge - Week 5 by Adam

Zac Power

Cairo, Egypt - Oct. 5th, 2018

Zac was an ordinary boy.  He loved zombies, robots, videogames, stuff like that.  But did he know everything was about to change?  Zac was in his room reading his favourite book Geronimo Stilton: Secret Agent.  Zac thought to himself that he wanted to be a secret agent like Geronimo when he grows up. Zac carried on with his book and heard a CRASH! He looked out his window, it’s the mailman. Zac ran down to the front door, opened it, checked the mail and he only found one thing, a letter that said from as I looked around...

100 Word Challenge - Week 5 by Gabriel

I was walking in the forest when I saw a random paper, I picked it up as I looked around I felt a chill run down my spine. I ran back to the house but I felt like i was being followed. I looked behind me but no one was there. I walked and walked but I could not find my house so I ran into a school and there I could find someone.  A tall suited man was inside and I asked him where could I find a map. He turned around, he had NO face and his skin was white!

100 Word Challenge - Week 5 by Alexis

Where Are They?

“Where are my shoes?” I saw as I looked around for them.  I looked in these places, my closet, under my bed, in my dresser, in my mouth (which is a weird spot to look but it is usually always there).  This time it wasn’t.   I also looked in the bathroom, in my living room, my brothers mouth, P.S. his breath stunk!  Anyway I looked everywhere for them I even looked in outer space and South Africa, South America, British Columbia, New Zealand.  I even looked in Antarctica and the Arctic.  I finally found them and now I can go to the ball.

100 Word Challenge - Week 5 by Cyrus

The Running Donkey

Once there was a King that lived in Turkey.  He went to his Royal farm and heard a loud noise, as he looked around he saw… a donkey!! Kicking the wooden fence the donkey looked angry and he started chasing the King.  The King ran as fast as he could to the castle and hid under his bed for two weeks.  Finally the donkey made it to the castle and found the King kicking him out of his bedroom window.  “Oww!” The King screamed as he lost his left leg in the middle of the road. Before he could get it back the Queen ran over it.
