T.U.S.C.

Speaking and listening are the parts of Language Arts that are used the most.

Every person is required to communicate in public in some way at some point in his or her life.  A good public speaker is not born.  The only way to learn how to speak confidently is to learn the techniques and practice, to observe speakers, and to practice, practice, practice!

Grade 4/5 T.U.S.C., The Ultimate Speaking Club, is a wonderful opportunity to observe, plan, and practice.  The objectives are not just to improve confidence and abilities, but also to encourage students to delight in good public speaking.

T.U.S.C. Preparation

No matter what job you have, remember to:

1.    Always speak in complete sentences

2.   Use your voice effectively

3.   Respect each other’s right to speak

4.   Listen appreciatively

5.   Be well prepared, otherwise you let down your entire class as well as yourself

6.   Enjoy your task!

The following information includes the schedule and the role that you will have for each of the TUSC meetings.  There is also an outline of all the duties and roles.  Please be familiar with these duties and use them as a reference when your turn comes up.

If you create something for your presentation or have pictures to go along with it, please make sure to either bring it in on a USB stick or email it to Miss Adamson at kadamson@sjsd.net

T.U.S.C. Duties

1.  Chairperson:

1.  Be familiar with the agenda before the meeting.
2.  Keeps the meeting running smoothly.
3.  Introduce each speaker and report in complete sentences.
4.  Thank each speaker with a positive comment.
5.  Tolerate no interruption or noise
6.  Use T.U.S.C. Chairperson’s Agenda form.
2.  Secretary:

1.  Be prepared with a pen and the “Secretary’s Report” form.
2.  Read over the form ahead of time and fill in the names.
3.  Fill in all necessary information as the meeting progresses.
4.  Place completed “Secretary’s Report” in class TUSC binder.

3.  Previous Secretary:
1.  You must rehearse and read your report orally at the meeting.

4.  Wacky Animal Fact:
We all love animals! Animals come in all shapes and sizes, and are able to live in the most incredible ways. This week, your job is to tell us about an animal you have learned about, where and how they live, and what amazing or strange ability or feature it has that makes it well suited to it’s habitat.  Don’t forget to find something wacky!

5.  Strath News:  What’s going on at Strathmillan?

We are part of a very busy school, and this week it is your job to find out more about something going on in the school or something happening to a member of Strathmillan. There are many approaches you can take to this presentation.  You could check the Strathmillan Newsletter, Calendar, or Website for current events.  You could look at bulletin boards around the school or attend one of our sports teams games.  You could also take an interview approach and interview a student in another grade, a teacher, the principal, the secretary, caretaker, etc...  Listen to the announcements every morning, as these will give you the start you are looking for!

6.  All About Me: 2-3 minutes long

This presentation is all about the you that we do not get to see at school.  Tell us about your interests, your favourite ways to spend time, who you like being with, what you like to eat, some of your home routines.  Give us an idea of the things that make you who you are, what you enjoy doing with your family, or even things you do on your own.  Tell us about your collections, your hobbies, and anything else you want!

7. Food Critic:  What is your favourite food to make?

Have a favourite food or recipe that you think everyone needs to know about?  Here is your chance to share a treat with the class.  Make sure to explain the recipe and tell us how to make your food step-by-step.  Why did you want to share this food item with us?  What makes it special to you?

If you would like to bring it in to share please feel free to do so, but you are not required to bring in the actual item.  If you don’t, please consider bringing in photos or emailing them to Miss Adamson to go along with your presentation.

Don’t forget that we are a nut-free school and classroom!  Please be mindful!

Please also email a copy of the recipe to Miss Adamson, so that she can make a class recipe book for everyone to have a copy of!

8. Interviewer:

1.  Choose someone you know (parents, grandparents, teachers, coach, etc.).
2.  Explain to them what T.U.S.C. is all about and your job this week.
3.  Prepare a list of questions to ask (5W’s, open-ended questions).
4.  Sample questions – What is your career?  Why did you choose it?  Tell me more about your work.

9.  Travel Agent:
1.  You must research and prepare to talk about a place you have travelled to on vacation, or a place that you would like to visit.
2.  Why would it be a good place to visit?  What can you do and see there?  What language is spoken? What should you keep in mind if you were to travel there? (What might you need to bring? What might you need for the weather? Currencies? Etc…)
3.  You may bring souvenirs or pictures to share with the class.

10.  Artifact Talk:
This is almost like show and tell!  You will bring an artifact or item from home and tell the class about it.  Your artifact could be one of many things.  It could be a souvenir from a trip, an important picture, a trophy or medal; it could be a toy or keepsake.  Before you decide on your artifact, make sure your parents agree to you bringing it to school.  You will need to tell the class about your artifact.  Where did it come from?  What is it used for?  Why is it special to you?  What memories does it hold for you?

11.  This Day in History:
Every day is the anniversary of some important event such as the birthday of a famous person, a battle, a natural disaster, etc.  Before I start, I will confirm the date of the next TUSC meeting.  Using the Internet, I will research what things happened on this day in the past. I will use the 5Ws & H to share the information with my class. I will create a short presentation using a Powerpoint or something similar.  Don’t forget to either bring it in on a USB or email it to Miss Adamson!

12.  Comedian:  How will you make us laugh?
1.  You must tell a few jokes or riddles.  Think outside of the box, be creative, but most of all have fun with this!
2.  Make sure to think, would my parents or Miss Adamson like this joke?  If you can’t honestly answer yes, then please choose something different.
3.  Allow 3 attempts to answer a riddle before giving the answer.
4.  Don’t forget to practice in front of family members or friends.

13.  Scientist:  How will you amaze us?
Today you are not just a student - you are a scientist!  Plan and perform a scientific experiment for the class.  It may be simple, or complex.

You will need to:

1. Be prepared to explain what the purpose of your experiment is

2.  Set up your experiment

3.  Bring in all of the necessary supplies

4.  Be prepared to explain the results of your experiment

5.  Explain the safety precautions that you must take

14.  Storyteller:  5-7 minutes

As the storyteller you are to bring in an interesting picture book to share with the class. You may bring one from home, the library, or borrow one from Miss Adamson.  Before you begin reading the book, explain why you chose to read it to the class.  It is important that you practice reading the book a few times at home to your parents, siblings, pets, or a friend.  Remember to keep the following things in mind:

1.  Your pace – this is how fast you read the book

2.  Your expression and tone – this makes it sound interesting.  You might include different voices for different characters.

3.  Your volume – speak loudly and clearly, make some eye contact

4. Pronunciation – practice to be sure you can pronounce all the words and names in the book
5.  Practice holding the book so that the class can see the pictures and you can read at the same time.

15.  Hidden Talent
Everyone has things they are good at.  We all have special skills that we know we do better than most others.  Your job this week is to share your special talent with us.  You might want to bring in a picture or video, you may want to bring supplies to demonstrate for us.  Maybe you play a really mean show tune on the harmonica, or maybe you can whistle through your nose, maybe you can jig, or perhaps you are a fact master on a specific topic. You should be prepared to explain how you came about finding this talent, what kinds of compliments you have received about your skill, and be prepared to show us this talent in some form!

16.  Commercial:  What will you try to sell us?
Your job this week is to prepare a commercial break for our TUSC meeting.  The purpose of this commercial break is for you to "sell" us something.  It could be a snack item, an article of clothing, a board game, or a household item.  You could even create a commercial to promote a local sports team, theatre, show, concert, a video game, or a movie.  You can choose to pre-record it and bring it in, or you may just present it in person.  Either way, be prepared!  Keep your commercial to the point and remember to discuss why this product or event is useful, what does the product do, will people be happy with it, how is it useful, how is it better or different than similar items?

17.  Demonstrator – What will you teach us?
The demonstrator is in charge of showing us how to do something.  You will need to bring your materials with you to present.  The demonstration must flow from beginning to end and cannot last more than 5 minutes.  Be creative!  You may not repeat any previous topics or demonstrations!  Here are some ideas to get your brain working:  How to tape a hockey stick, how to wrap a present, how to create a haiku poem, how to dance the two step, how to play the spoons, how to take care of a pet, how to clean your teeth ...  Have fun!

18.  Problem Solver – Can you stump us?
1.  Create or find a word problem for the class to solve.  This could involve addition, subtraction, multiplication or division.
2.  Once you have asked the class for 3 solutions, demonstrate how to solve the problem.

19.  Sports Reporter – This week in sports!
It is your turn to present the sports report!  You may choose any sport you are interested in at the moment.  Remember that this is NEWS – so keep in mind that your story must come from the sports events of last week, and you must present your report without bias.  This means that you must not let your opinion affect how you present the story.  Please do not simply read scores from a certain league.  Try to focus on accomplishments and successes!

20.  Inventor – Changing lives one idea at a time
This is a fun one, be creative!  People have been inventing and creating forever and they continue to invent as time goes on.  You can choose to speak about an invention and discuss its uses, its purpose, how it has made the world better, or how silly and useless it is and how you can’t believe it was actually invented and sold.  You can also present to the class your own invention that you think would be cool and useful for the world.

21.  Charity Choice
Charities are important because they help raise money and awareness for different causes in our community.  This week, your job is to look into a local charity.  In your presentation, you should include:  the charity name, the cause, major events that it is involved with, why it is important, and why you chose to showcase it.  Explain ways that you think kids can help raise awareness for this cause.  Your presentation may include posters, or pictures.

22.  Techie
This is your opportunity to share an appropriate app with the class.  You could also share a website.  Good websites and apps can be hard to find, but this week, it is your job!  With your parents’ help, find an educational and fun website or app (sorry – has to be a free download!) that features interactive learning for students your age.  We will show your presentation on the SMART board and you will guide the class through the features.  Be prepared with the website address or app written down, and practice typing them to make sure they work.  Explain to the class why this is such a great app /site, and who you think might benefit from exploring it.

23.  Pollster
1.  Decide upon a topic and create a survey question.
2.  Make a prediction as to how people will answer.
3.  Survey at least 10 people.
4.  Collect and manage the data.
5.  Provide the TUSC members with a data organizer (like
a chart, tally, or otherwise).

24.  Movie Critic
Choose a movie (a favourite or one you have recently seen) to review.  Your review should include a summary without giving away too much (like how the movie ends), your rating (ex. 4 out of 5 stars, thumbs up/down) and your opinions.  What did you like about it and why?  What did you not like and why? What was done well about it?  How could it be improved?  Who you would recommend it to and why?

25.  Citizenship Award
This is a really nice way to end our TUSC meetings.  You will honour someone in our classroom that stands out from this week.  Who do you think has gone above and beyond in helping the class or around the school?  Maybe you know someone who does something in their spare time to help the community, or maybe they are really nice to their brother or sister.  Your job is to pay close attention to your classmates this week.  It is important you are watching to see who is helping out a lot around the class, who always uses kind words and is generous with their time and belongings.  Please do not base your choice on who your close friends are, base it on your observations.  The other part of your job is to create the citizenship award to present to your classmate.  It must have their name and some of the reasons that you nominated them.

26.  Vacation
This is your week to take it easy!  Don’t forget to be an excellent and respectful audience member.  If there is a role you would like to do that you won’t have the chance to, let Miss Adamson know that you would like to do it this week.
