October Acrostic Poetry

Last week we started a new art project, entitled "Fall Trees".  We talked about value and students were able to recognize and see the "3D" effect that the painting has.  They noticed that the back layer was the lightest and each layer gets darker.  This is what creates that 3D effect.

The closer bottom layer that is black helps create the
3D effect.  By layering branches overtop of each other
it helps to create the effect as well.

Students started by painting their background using watercolours.  While that was drying we practice drawing trees.  We found out that it's a lot harder than it looks!  Then, once we became expert tree drawers we started our first layer of our painting.  Mixing the black and white paint we had to create the perfect light grey shade.  We repeated the process two more times making the grey darker each time.

While we all had the same concept and design, it's really
neat how they all turned out so differently.

Our next step in this project is to create acrostic poetry.  Do you know what an acrostic poem is?  Well we will tell you.  You choose a theme and a title for your poem - not too short though.  Then you take the title and write it going vertically down your page.  Then, you take the letter you have on each line and that is what you use to start each sentence.

We talked about what it's like now that our weather has changed and we are into Fall.  We came up with lots of great ideas as we discussed what it looks like, sounds like, feels like and even smells like!   In our minds we saw honking geese flying overhead, pumpkins being carved into scary faces, the sounds of leaves crunching beneath your feet after they've all fallen off the trees and layering clothes and wearing jackets so we don't freeze during recess.

After we came up with lots of ideas we discussed possible titles for our poetry.  Some that we came up with were October, Halloween, Autumn and Fall Leaves.  Once we had these we were able to get down to writing and we started creating descriptive poetry about Fall.  We are in the process of adding them to our kidblogs so that we can share them with our classmates and our families.

Here are just a few of the poems coming from the class:

Autumn

Braeden

All the leaves falling off the trees
Under the dark red sky
The geese are flying over head
Under my feet leaves are crunching
Many pumpkins on the street
No more candy in the the candy bags

October

Abigail

O: Over all the sights, the smell is in the air
C: Colors of leaves all over the ground
T: Trick-or-treaters come to my door for my nut free candy
O: Over my head, the honking geese are flying south
B: Buying candy for the little trick-or-treaters
E: Every sip of hot chocolate trickles down my throat
R:Raking leaves into a pile, and jumping into the softness

The students were so enthusiastic about the project that there were some that asked if we could do Adobe Voices for them.  I love taking suggestions from my students so of course this became one part of our projects.  This will go with our poems so that you can hear exactly how they should sound. We can't wait to share the final products with you and once they are done they will be posted on our kidblogs. Make sure to check them out in the next week.
